The Lane Norfolk – Membership Terms & Conditions

Last updated: October 2026

These Membership Terms & Conditions (“Terms”) apply when you purchase or hold a membership with The Lane Norfolk (“The Lane”, “we”, “us” or “our”).

By purchasing a membership, you agree to these Terms. Please read them carefully before joining.

Nothing in these Terms affects any statutory rights that cannot legally be excluded or restricted.

1. About The Lane

The Lane is an online freelancer directory and community created to help independent professionals get seen and to make it easier for businesses to discover freelance talent.

Email: hello@thelanenorfolk.co.uk
Website: www.thelanenorfolk.co.uk

The Lane Norfolk is a partnership run by Amy Patterson and Grace Boughton trading as The Lane Norfolk. Our business address is Reflection, The Turnpike, Bunwell, Norwich, NR16 1SP.

Membership provides access to the features and benefits associated with the membership plan selected at the time of joining.

2. Who can join

The Lane is intended for genuine freelancers, sole traders, independent professionals and small independent businesses providing freelance or professional services. Membership is for people and businesses based in, or regularly working in, Norfolk.

By joining, you confirm that:

  • you are aged 18 or over;
  • you are joining for business purposes;
  • the information you provide is accurate and relates to a genuine business or professional service;
  • you have authority to provide and publish any information, images, logos or other content submitted to us;
  • your business operates lawfully and professionally;
  • you will keep your profile and account information reasonably accurate and up to date;
  • you will not falsely claim qualifications, professional memberships, accreditations, experience, insurance or other credentials; and
  • you are responsible for holding any licences, registrations, qualifications, professional memberships or insurance required for the services you provide.

We reserve the right to decline a membership application where we reasonably believe an applicant is not suitable for The Lane or does not meet our membership criteria. If we decline your application, we will refund any payment taken in full.

3. Membership applications and vetting

We want The Lane to be a trusted directory of genuine independent professionals.

We may therefore carry out reasonable checks when reviewing membership applications or profiles. These may include reviewing information supplied by you together with publicly available information such as your website, business details or professional profiles.

We may ask you for further information where reasonably necessary to confirm your identity, business or suitability for membership.

Any checks carried out by The Lane are intended to support the integrity of the directory. They are not a comprehensive verification of every statement made by a member and do not constitute a guarantee, certification or endorsement of a member’s qualifications, competence, experience, financial standing, insurance or suitability for a particular project.

Businesses considering working with a member should carry out their own checks and due diligence.

4. Membership plans

The membership options and benefits currently available will be shown on The Lane website before you purchase.

Lane 01 – Monthly

Lane 01 costs £9.99 per month. VAT is not currently applicable.

Your membership will renew automatically each month using your chosen payment method until you cancel it.

You can cancel at any time. Cancellation prevents future renewal payments from being taken and your membership will normally remain active until the end of the period you have already paid for.

Payments already made are non-refundable except as set out in section 8 or where required by law.

Lane 02 – Annual

Lane 02 costs £99 for 12 months’ membership. VAT is not currently applicable.

Payment is made in full when you join.

Your membership begins on the date confirmed to you when you purchase and continues for 12 months.

Automatic renewal:

Lane 02 will automatically renew for a further 12 months unless you cancel the renewal before the renewal date. We will make the renewal arrangements clear before you purchase and will provide an appropriate reminder before taking an annual renewal payment. You can switch off automatic renewal at any time before the renewal date.

Annual membership payments are non-refundable except as set out in section 8 or where required by law.

5. Prices and payment

Membership prices will be displayed clearly before you purchase.

You agree to provide accurate and valid payment information and to pay the fees associated with your selected membership.

We may change membership prices from time to time. A price change will not retrospectively affect a membership period that has already been paid for.

Where the price of a recurring membership is changing, we will give at least 30 days’ notice before the new price applies to a future renewal.

Any taxes or mandatory charges applicable to your purchase will be made clear before you complete your purchase.

Payments are processed securely by Stripe, our third-party payment provider.

We use Stripe for payments, analytics, and other business services. Stripe may collect personal data including via cookies and similar technologies. The personal data Stripe collects may include transactional data and identifying information about devices that connect to its services. Stripe uses this information to operate and improve the services it provides to us, including for fraud and prevention and detection, authentication, analytics related to the performance of its services, and to enhance and customize the user experience. You can learn more about Stripe and read its privacy policy at https://stripe.com/privacy.

Membership payments will appear on your bank or card statement as THE LANE NORFOLK.

If you think a payment has been taken in error, please contact us first at hello@thelanenorfolk.co.uk so we can put it right quickly.

6. Failed payments

If a recurring payment fails, we may attempt to take payment again and/or contact you to update your payment details.

While payment remains outstanding, we may temporarily suspend access to member-only benefits and/or hide or remove your public profile.

If payment is not received within a reasonable period, we may end your membership.

We will not charge additional late-payment fees unless these have been clearly communicated to you in advance and are permitted by law.

7. Cancellation and automatic renewal

You can cancel a recurring membership at any time using the cancellation options available through your account or by contacting us at hello@thelanenorfolk.co.uk.

Cancelling your membership stops future automatic renewals. Unless otherwise stated or required by law, your membership will remain active until the end of the membership period you have already paid for.

Your public profile and access to member-only benefits may be removed when that paid membership period ends.

Cancellation does not normally create an entitlement to a refund for a membership period already used or paid for, except where required by law or otherwise stated in these Terms.

We will make it reasonably straightforward for members to cancel recurring memberships.

8. Changing your mind in the first 14 days

Membership of The Lane is bought for business purposes, so the consumer cancellation rights that apply to personal purchases will not normally apply.

We still want you to feel confident joining. If you change your mind within 14 days of joining and your profile has not yet gone live, email hello@thelanenorfolk.co.uk and we will refund your payment in full.

Once your profile is live, the cancellation terms in sections 4 and 7 apply.

Nothing in these Terms limits any statutory rights that apply to you.

9. Membership is personal to you

Your membership belongs to the individual or business that purchased it.

Unless we agree otherwise in writing, membership may not be transferred, resold or assigned to another individual or business.

Member-only resources, benefits, logins and content must not be shared with non-members where they are provided exclusively as part of membership.

10. Your account

Where you are provided with login details or an online member account, you are responsible for keeping your account information and password secure.

You must not knowingly allow another person to access member-only areas using your account unless your membership expressly allows this.

Please tell us promptly if you believe your account has been accessed without permission or your login details have been compromised.

11. Your Lane profile

A key part of membership is having a public profile within The Lane’s online freelancer directory.

By joining The Lane, you understand that information you submit for your public profile will be published online and may be viewed by members of the public, businesses and other users.

Depending on the information you choose to provide, your profile may include:

  • your name;
  • your business or trading name;
  • your photograph or business logo;
  • your general location or area;
  • your business description;
  • services you provide;
  • examples of your work or portfolio;
  • your website;
  • links to professional social media profiles;
  • contact or enquiry information; and
  • other information you choose to include.

We will make it reasonably clear which information is intended to appear publicly.

Please do not provide information for your public profile that you do not want to be publicly available.

You can ask us to correct or update your profile by contacting us.

12. Profile visibility and search engines

The Lane is a public online platform.

Information published on your public profile may therefore be indexed by internet search engines, shared by other people or appear in third-party search results.

Although we can remove information from The Lane itself, we cannot guarantee the immediate removal of information that has already been indexed, cached, archived or copied by search engines or other third parties.

13. Profile and member content

You remain responsible for information and content you provide to The Lane.

You must not submit or publish content that:

  • is false, inaccurate or deliberately misleading;
  • infringes another person’s copyright, trade mark, intellectual property, privacy or other rights;
  • contains confidential information you do not have permission to disclose;
  • is unlawful, fraudulent, discriminatory, defamatory, threatening, abusive or seriously offensive;
  • impersonates another individual or business;
  • makes false claims about qualifications, accreditations, memberships, experience or professional status;
  • promotes unlawful goods, services or activities;
  • contains malicious software or other harmful material; or
  • could reasonably put users at risk or materially damage The Lane or its community.

We may edit formatting, spelling or presentation where reasonably necessary to maintain consistency across The Lane.

We will not intentionally make a material change to the meaning of your profile without your agreement.

14. Images, logos and intellectual property

You retain ownership of the content you provide to us.

By submitting photographs, logos, text, portfolio examples, testimonials or other content to The Lane, you grant us a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to use, reproduce, format, display and publish that content for the purposes of:

  • creating and displaying your profile;
  • operating The Lane website and directory;
  • promoting The Lane and its directory;
  • promoting members through The Lane’s website, email communications and social media; and
  • showcasing The Lane community.

You confirm that you own the content or have all permissions necessary to allow us to use it in this way.

This permission will normally continue while your membership or profile is active.

Ending your membership will not require us to remove content from historic marketing materials or social media posts that were lawfully created and published while you were a member, although we will consider reasonable removal requests where appropriate.

The Lane’s own name, branding, website design, graphics, copy, resources and other original content remain owned by us or our licensors and must not be copied, reproduced or commercially exploited without permission.

While your membership is active, you are welcome to use any “Member of The Lane” badge we provide to show that you are a member. Please do not alter it or use it in a way that suggests The Lane endorses or guarantees your services.

15. Using The Lane directory

The Lane directory is provided to help businesses and individuals discover and connect with independent professionals.

You must not:

  • scrape, harvest or systematically extract information from the directory;
  • use automated software, bots or similar tools to collect member information;
  • reproduce or create a separate database from information contained within The Lane;
  • use member contact details for unlawful or unsolicited bulk marketing;
  • sell, licence or commercially exploit member information;
  • attempt to interfere with the security or operation of The Lane; or
  • use The Lane for any unlawful, fraudulent or abusive purpose.

Reasonable use of publicly displayed contact information for genuine business enquiries is permitted.

Businesses and other visitors using The Lane website are also covered by our Website Terms of Use.

16. Enquiries and opportunities

The Lane helps businesses discover independent professionals.

We are not an employment agency, recruitment agency, employer, agent or party to any contract or working arrangement entered into between a member and a prospective client.

We do not guarantee that membership will result in enquiries, leads, work, income, contracts, referrals or any particular level of profile visibility.

Inclusion in The Lane does not constitute a guarantee, certification, recommendation or endorsement by The Lane of a member’s services or suitability for a particular project.

Members and clients are responsible for carrying out their own checks and agreeing their own:

  • scope of work;
  • fees;
  • contracts;
  • payment arrangements;
  • timescales;
  • insurance requirements;
  • intellectual property arrangements; and
  • other working terms.

The Lane is not responsible for negotiating or enforcing agreements between members and clients.

17. Member standards

We want The Lane to be a trusted, welcoming and supportive community.

Members are expected to behave professionally and respectfully when interacting with other members, prospective clients and The Lane team.

We may investigate complaints or concerns about a member where we reasonably believe their conduct may breach these Terms, create a genuine risk to another person or materially damage the integrity of The Lane.

Where appropriate, we may ask the member for information or an explanation before deciding what action to take.

18. Complaints and disputes involving members

If you believe a member profile breaches these Terms or you have a serious concern about the conduct of a member in connection with The Lane, please contact hello@thelanenorfolk.co.uk.

We may review complaints and take action in relation to membership where appropriate.

However, The Lane is not a dispute-resolution or mediation service and is not responsible for resolving contractual, payment, service or other commercial disputes between freelancers and their clients.

19. Membership benefits, resources and events

Membership benefits may include directory listings, member resources, opportunities, member offers, events, community activities, communications or other features depending on your membership plan.

Specific events, activities or resources may be subject to additional terms or availability.

Members sometimes arrange their own meetups, coworking sessions or collaborations. Unless The Lane organises an event itself, we are not responsible for it, and members take part at their own risk.

Unless expressly stated otherwise, resources, templates, articles, events and other information provided through The Lane are intended as general business information and support only.

They do not constitute legal, financial, tax, accounting or other regulated professional advice. You are responsible for obtaining appropriate professional advice where required.

Member offers

From time to time, we may arrange offers, discounts or perks for members from local businesses and other partners (“member offers”).

Member offers are provided by the partner business, not by The Lane. The partner’s own terms apply, and any questions or problems with an offer should be raised with them. We are not responsible for the goods or services partners provide.

Member offers are an extra, not a core part of your paid membership. We or our partners may change, pause or withdraw an offer at any time, and a change to or withdrawal of an offer does not entitle you to a refund.

Member offers are for current members only. Please do not share discount codes or offer details with non-members. Offers have no cash value and cannot be transferred or exchanged for cash.

If your membership is cancelled, ends or is suspended, you will no longer be able to use member offers, including any you have not yet redeemed.

20. Changes to membership benefits

The Lane will continue to evolve and we may add, change or remove membership features from time to time.

We may make reasonable changes where necessary to improve the service, respond to member needs, address technical or security requirements, comply with law or reflect changes in how The Lane operates.

We will not use this right simply to remove core paid benefits without good reason.

Where a change materially reduces the core benefits of an existing paid membership, we will take reasonable steps to notify affected members.

If a change materially reduces the core benefits of your paid membership, you can cancel and we will refund the unused portion of your membership.

21. Suspension and termination

We may suspend, restrict or terminate a membership where we reasonably believe:

  • membership fees remain unpaid;
  • these Terms have been materially or repeatedly breached;
  • information supplied by the member is fraudulent or seriously misleading;
  • a member is using The Lane for unlawful or fraudulent purposes;
  • a member’s conduct creates a genuine risk to another person;
  • a member has seriously misused the directory or member information; or
  • continued membership could reasonably cause serious harm to The Lane, its users or its community.

Where appropriate and reasonably practicable, we will contact you before taking action and may give you an opportunity to resolve the issue.

Where we terminate membership because of a serious or material breach of these Terms, payments already made will not normally be refunded, except where required by law.

If we choose to end your membership for reasons unrelated to a breach by you, we will normally provide an appropriate pro-rata refund for any unused paid membership period.

22. What happens when membership ends

When your membership ends:

  • your public directory profile may be removed or unpublished;
  • your access to member-only areas, resources and benefits may end;
  • you will no longer be able to use member offers or discount codes;
  • you must stop representing yourself as a current member of The Lane; and
  • any provisions of these Terms that are intended to continue after membership ends will remain in effect.

Ending membership does not affect rights or obligations that arose before the membership ended.

23. Availability of The Lane

We aim to keep The Lane available and functioning reliably but cannot guarantee uninterrupted or error-free access.

The website, directory or membership features may occasionally be unavailable because of maintenance, updates, technical problems, security issues or circumstances outside our reasonable control.

Where reasonably possible, we will try to minimise disruption.

24. Third-party websites and services

The Lane may contain links to websites, social media profiles, payment services or other platforms operated by third parties.

We do not control those third-party services and are not responsible for their availability, content, security, privacy practices or terms.

The inclusion of a link does not necessarily mean that The Lane endorses the third-party website, business or service.

25. Our responsibility

Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability where doing so would be unlawful, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or any other liability that cannot legally be excluded or restricted.

The Lane provides a directory and community platform. We do not provide or supervise the professional services advertised by individual members.

To the extent permitted by law, we are not responsible for losses arising solely from:

  • information or content supplied by members or other third parties;
  • the acts, omissions, services or conduct of a member, client or other third party;
  • a decision to appoint or work with a member;
  • a commercial dispute between a member and client;
  • third-party websites or services; or
  • circumstances outside our reasonable control.

We do not guarantee the accuracy, completeness or ongoing availability of information supplied by members.

To the extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any loss of profit, loss of business, loss of opportunity or any indirect or consequential loss.

To the extent permitted by law, our total liability to you in connection with your membership will not exceed the membership fees you have paid to us in the 12 months before the claim arose.

Nothing in this section affects any legal rights or remedies that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited.

26. Events outside our reasonable control

We will not be responsible for a failure or delay in providing The Lane where this is caused by circumstances outside our reasonable control.

This may include significant internet or hosting failures, cyber incidents, failures of third-party platforms or infrastructure, natural disasters, government action or other events that we could not reasonably prevent.

We will take reasonable steps to restore affected services where possible.

27. Privacy

We process personal information in accordance with our Privacy Policy.

Our Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, why and how we use it, what information may be displayed publicly, how long information may be retained and the rights individuals have in relation to their personal information.

28. Marketing communications

Joining The Lane does not automatically require you to consent to unrelated marketing communications.

Where required, we will ask separately whether you would like to receive marketing communications such as news, opportunities, events, resources and community updates.

You can unsubscribe from optional marketing communications at any time.

We may still send essential service communications relating to your membership, payments, account, profile, security, changes to these Terms or operation of The Lane where necessary.

29. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time, including where necessary to reflect changes to The Lane, membership benefits, technology, legal requirements or regulatory guidance.

The latest version will be available on The Lane website and will show the date it was last updated.

Where a change materially affects an existing paid membership, we will take reasonable steps to notify affected members before the change takes effect where appropriate.

We will not use this provision to make unfair or unreasonable changes to an existing paid membership.

30. General

If any provision of these Terms is found to be unlawful or unenforceable, the remaining provisions will continue to apply.

A delay by us in enforcing a provision of these Terms does not mean that we have waived our right to enforce it later.

Nothing in these Terms creates an employment relationship, partnership, joint venture or agency relationship between The Lane and a member.

Unless expressly stated otherwise, no person other than you and The Lane has a right to enforce these Terms.

31. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales.

If you are acting as a consumer, you may also benefit from mandatory protections available under the law applicable to you.

Nothing in these Terms restricts any rights you have under applicable consumer law that cannot legally be excluded.

32. Contact us
